Years ago, I remember spending over 250 dollars on my first rod and thinking I was crazy. The rod is still in my possession, but I still think it was too expensive.
Did it help me catch fish any better than my cheaper rods? I can’t really answer that scientifically, but it’s an awesome surf rod, and I have countless memories attached to it.
Essentially, the price is now irrelevant, but it wasn’t irrelevant at the time, more a case of misguided priorities. Yes, the impetuousness of youth.
These days I’m still stunned to think that there are fishing rods available that exceed $4500.
Many of you know the brand, and those of you who don’t won’t be surprised to learn it’s a fly rod.
In fact, you’ll find the most expensive fishing rods belong to several fly rod brands including the Oyster Bamboo Fly Rod, Sage, Loomis, and Orvis.
We’ll look at this phenomenon in more detail later, but first, we should check out the most expensive fishing rods on Amazon.
Whether these rods are the most expensive is debatable. However, these rods are accessible to you online, and you’ll have to have pretty deep pockets.

Are Expensive Fishing Rods Worth the Money?
Value for money is in the eye of the beholder. One has to be honest and say that spending lot of money for top-shelf kit isn’t always the answer to catching more fish.
There’s no substitute for skill and experience, and I’d challenge my skills with a $25 dollar fishing rod against a beginner with 1000 bucks worth of the best gear any day.
Quality rods that last, while getting the job done with plenty left in the tank, are rods that are worth the money.
Purchasing the best money can buy is often about more than catching fish, however.
This is where value for money can be very subjective. If an angler wants to fish with the best (most expensive) every time, then expensive rods can be worth every penny.
On the other hand, for the wealthy angler, even the most expensive fishing rod available is likely to be mere pocket change, therefore it makes no difference.
For the rest of us, the best we can afford, with the features that enhance our fish catching chances and fishing experience, is the best money can buy.
It’s also important to note that the most expensive fishing rods don’t necessarily equate to the best.
What Are Some Of The Most Expensive Fishing Brands?
Like any product, fishing has its top-shelf brands. There are several brands that have expensive products, but there are big household name brands such as Shimano, PENN, and Daiwa that cover the full spectrum of price points.
Interestingly, you will find that the fly industry covers the lion’s share of the most expensive fishing gear.
Oyster Bamboo Fly Rods, for example, sell for as much as $4500. The bamboo rods are crafted by artisans and custom-made with intricate designs to the angler’s specifications.
This type of long-established family business tradition is a class of fishing that has royalty and exclusivity deep in its genetic makeup.
While the quality performance and endurance of these rods are peerless, there’s a brand premium, and a premium on exclusive fly tradition.
Here’s a list of expensive brands, but there’s plenty more.
- St Croix
- Hamachi
- Sage
- Oyster Bamboo Fly Rods
- Daiwa
- Shimano
- Van Staal
- Accurate
- Tibor
- Rapala
